The Deputy Secretary-General, Asha-Rose Migiro, with the support of the Rule of Law Unit in the Executive Office of the Secretary-General and in cooperation with the Open Society Justice Initiative, convened a consultative retreat on rule of law at the Greentree Estate,  Long Island, on 17 – 18 January 2012.

 


03/11/2011 -- Annual report on the rule of law debated at the General Assembly

The Secretary-General’s annual report on strengthening and coordinating United Nations rule of law activities was presented to the Sixth Committee on 5 October 2011 at the annual debate of Member States on the agenda item “rule of law at the national and international levels”.

28/07/2011 -- UN System-Wide Training on Rule of Law Piloted in Turin

On 11 – 15 July, the United Nations Rule of Law Coordination and Resource Group, in partnership with United Nations System Staff College, piloted the UN Unified Rule of Law Training course at the United Nations Campus in Turin, Italy.

 


27/07/2011 -- Strengthening the rule of law by addressing statelessness

All UN entities system-wide must increase their efforts to address statelessness. In cooperation with UNHCR, the Rule of Law Unit organized a panel discussion on Preventing and Reducing Statelessness on 20 May 2011. The panel highlighted the issue of statelessness and the importance of addressing it to strengthen the rule of law.

The President of the 65th session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Joseph Deiss, with the support of the Rule of Law Coordination and Resource Group and the Rule of Law Unit, organized an Interactive Thematic Debate of the General Assembly on The Rule of Law and Global Challenges in April 2011.

 


25/04/2011 -- Consultations around the Secretary-General’s report to the Security Council on rule of law developments

In March 2011, three consultations took place amongst rule of law experts from the United Nations, partner organizations and Member States on UN approaches to criminal, transitional, economic and social justice and the impact of UN activities in conflict and post-conflict societies.

18/03/2011 -- Workshop on justice, security and national reconciliation convened in Liberia

On 16 and 17 February, with the joint support of the United Nations Mission in Liberia and the United Nations Development Programme, the Government of Liberia convened a workshop to prepare a three-year joint programme on Justice, Security and National Reconciliation based on the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission Priority Plan.

 


10/02/2011 -- Poll on Khmer Rouge Trials: Victims See Participation Positive, Satisfied with Duch Verdict

The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia is a hybrid court established in 2006 to try war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during the Democratic Kampuchea regime. Two surveys among the victims and Civil Party applicants were conducted, revealing positive attitudes.

10/11/2010 -- Rule of Law Training for Judicial Affairs Officers gathers participants from United Nations Partners

The Department for Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) delivered the second Rule of Law Training for Judicial Affairs Officers in United Nations Peace Operations in October 2010. The training took place in Egypt at the Cairo Centre for Training on Conflict Resolution and Peacekeeping in Africa (CCCPA).

01/08/2010 -- First rule of law course conducted for judicial affairs officers in peace operations

The last week of July, 2010 marked the first comprehensive training programme exclusively dedicated to officers working on justice issues in United Nations peace operations. The Rule of Law Training for Judicial Affairs Officers in United Nations Peace Operations was a five-day 'pilot' course that took place in Accra, Ghana.

The Judiciary Advisory Unit (JAU) of the United Nations Mission in Central African Republic and Chad (MINURCAT) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have developed and begun to implement a training programme for 155 ‘non-professional’ and ‘auxiliary’ judges in Eastern Chad to strengthen the rule of law in the area.

Panel discussion on Rule of law in post-conflict and fragile settings, included presentations from representatives from Haiti, Palestine, the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Central African Republic . A common theme arising from the presentations was the need for national ownership for strengthening the rule of law.

 


-- Rule of Law Training Programme for Judicial Affairs Officers held in Ghana

The fourth DPKO Rule of Law Training Programme for Judicial Affairs Officers in UN Peacekeeping Operations took place in October 2011. The modules included international law, domestic justice systems, transitional justice, gender justice and legislative reform.
