International organizations

The UN cooperates on rule of law issues with a wide range of intergovernmental organizations, consisting of States and other intergovernmental organizations. These international and regional organizations have diverse functions related to the rule of law, including the development of norms and standards as well as good practices and knowledge. Many are involved in assisting to strengthen the rule of law in countries or at regional levels as multilateral assistance providers.

The international and regional bodies tasked with functions of fact-finding, mediation and arbitration and adjudication, such as the international arbitral tribunals and regional judicial institutions contribute to the rule of law at the regional and international level. The International Criminal Court (ICC), the only permanent international criminal tribunal, represents the most significant recent development in combating impunity for the most serious crimes of concern to the international community.
